Veridus Advisory: Arizona Primary Election 2024 Results
Dear Clients:
Arizona’s Primary Election went smoothly Tuesday, with only minor hiccups as turnout was light and most ballots were returned early. Day-of voting and mail-in ballots returned early were counted first; mail-in ballots dropped off Tuesday will be tabulated in the coming days.
Below is what we know as of 10:30 PM Tuesday regarding some of the closest-watched races:
It’s official: Kari Lake will square off this fall against Congressman Ruben Gallego (D) for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Kyrsten Sinema. On Tuesday, Lake handily dispatched Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb in the Republican Primary, though her 13-point lead is less impressive than many had expected.
CD-1:
Former state representative Amish Shah narrowly leads a six-candidate Democratic field. The winner will face GOP Congressman David Schweikert in what will be one of the state’s closest-watched races.
CD-3:
Former Phoenix City Councilmember Yassamin Ansari is ahead of former state legislator Raquel Terán in this Democratic contest, though the outcome remains too close to call. The winner in this deep blue district will almost certainly become Arizona’s next Congresswoman.
CD-8:
Trump-endorsed Abe Hamadeh currently has the edge over Trump-endorsed Blake Masters in this bruising GOP Primary. The winner should skate to November victory in this ruby-red district.
Senate:
LD-1:
Former legislator Mark Finchem appears headed back to the Capitol as he leads state Sen. Ken Bennett (R) by a solid margin.
LD-7:
MAGA state Sen. Wendy Rogers leads Rep. David Cook in a GOP contest with implications for the direction of the caucus.
LD-17:
It’s neck-and-neck between GOP Sen. Justine Wadsack (R) and former lawmaker Vince Leach, who is trying to return to the Capitol after losing to Wadsack last election. Democrats may make a serious play to pick up this seat in November.
LD-22:
Democratic Sen. Eva Diaz (D) appears to have easily fended off a challenge from former Rep. Leezah Sun, who resigned early this year due to an ethics complaint.
Arizona House of Representatives:
LD-5:
Rep. Sarah Liguori looks to be the top vote getter in the Democratic Primary for this safe blue district. Aaron Márquez looks to be the 2nd place finisher.
LD-7:
Former lawmaker Walt Blackman and Rep. David Marshall are winning this GOP Primary - far outpacing Steve Slaton, who was dogged by allegations of stolen valor in this heated contest.
LD-14:
GOP Rep. Laurin Hendrix and Khyl Powell enjoy a healthy lead over the five-candidate field.
LD-16:
Rep. Teresa Martinez (R) leads the GOP Primary field in this swing district. Her running mate, businessman Chris Lopez, is narrowly in 2nd place.
LD-21:
Democratic Reps. Consuelo Hernandez and Rep. Stephanie Stahl Hamilton are leading the field.
